Shane “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” Victorino
Born and raised on Maui, Shane Victorino was a very active child, and sports served as a way to channel his energy. Shane played Little League from the time he was five, right through high school. At St. Anthony High School, Shane also excelled in track and field, setting a state record for the 100-meter dash in 1999.
Shane was drafted into the minor league baseball system right out of high school in 1999. He made his Major League debut in 2003 with the San Diego Padres. During his 12-year career Shane also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels, and nicknamed “The Flyin’ Hawaiian.”
In 2008, Shane helped lead the Philadelphia Phillies to their World Series championship, and did the same for the Boston Red Sox in 2013. During his career as an outfielder, he received four Gold Glove awards for his superior individual fielding performance. Shane was the first Hawaiian-born positional player to be named to an All-Star team and was selected for Major League All-Star games twice.
Shane has been recognized for
his off the field contributions to the community as a recipient of the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award and Branch Rickey Award in 2008 and 2011 respectively. He has also established the Shane Victorino Foundation is dedicated to promoting opportunities for underserved youth. The Foundation, founded with his wife in 20010, engages in projects which provide children in need with educational, recreational and wellness programs.
